Middle School Forum

Supported by the Academy for Educational Development (AED) and Advocates for Children (AFC), the Middle School Forum is designed to gather stakeholders from across the city to identify common challenges and share information on promising practices to address the needs of the growing overage middle school student population. The forum will offer participants the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the issues affecting these students, make connections and partnerships with colleagues, and leave with detailed information on programs that can be implemented in their own schools.

Early Indicators (JPMC Funded Work)

With support from the JP Morgan Chase Foundation, AED is leveraging its expertise in middle-grades education and the growing body of research on middle-grades indicators of high school failure. The overall goal of this first phase of work (August 2007-August 2009) is to create, pilot, and refine a series of strategies, tools, and resources for school leaders (principals, team leaders and others) to use in creating school cultures and systems for identifying and intervening with students who 1) otherwise might fall off the path to success in middle school and be at-risk for high school failure; or, 2) have already fallen off and need targeted support to become reengaged with their educations and their futures. Below is a description of the work accomplished in year one. The two pilot sites for the 2008-2009 school year are MS 80 and MS 244.
